G2 Driving Lessons Markham | Safe Gear Driving School
The G2 road test doesn’t touch a highway. It’s conducted entirely on ordinary streets — residential roads, business districts, intersections — which means the test you sit in Markham is genuinely different from the one someone sits in Newmarket or Kleinburg.
Markham’s version is dense. Heavy commercial corridors, high pedestrian volumes, multi-lane arterials where a simple left turn asks you to judge three lanes of moving traffic at once. That’s what your examiner will watch you handle, and it’s what our lessons are built around.
What Makes the G2 Test in Markham Harder Than Most
Three things come up again and again with students here.
Left turns across Highway 7 and the major arterials. Turning left across four lanes of steady traffic on Highway 7, Kennedy, McCowan or Warden is the single most common place Markham candidates lose marks — not because they can’t do it, but because they either hesitate too long and block traffic, or commit to a gap that isn’t quite there. That judgement is trainable, and it takes repetition on those specific roads.
Pedestrian volume in the commercial areas. Around the Steeles and Kennedy corridor, and the retail stretches along Highway 7, there are pedestrians crossing constantly — including mid-block. Examiners watch closely for whether you’re scanning for them or only watching the car ahead.
Hidden stop signs and obstructed sightlines in the newer subdivisions. Cornell, Greensborough, Wismer and Berczy have grid layouts where parked cars regularly obscure a stop sign or a cross street until you’re nearly on it. Rolling through one of those is an immediate fault.
Add Unionville’s historic Main Street — narrow, on-street parking, pedestrians — and you have a test area that rewards preparation on the actual ground far more than generic practice does.
Where We Train in Markham
Across the whole city, and deliberately in the places the test is hardest:
Highway 7 and the arterial corridors — Kennedy, McCowan, Warden, Woodbine, Markham Road and 16th Avenue, for left turns, lane discipline and gap judgement in real traffic.
Unionville — narrow streets, on-street parking and pedestrian traffic, which is where low-speed control genuinely gets learned.
Cornell, Greensborough, Wismer and Berczy — newer subdivision grids for stop-sign discipline, observation and residential speed control.
Markham Village, Milliken, Cachet and Angus Glen — a broad mix of road types and conditions.
Free pick-up and drop-off anywhere in Markham — home, school or work.

If your G2 appointment is coming up, we’ve written a companion guide: 5 expert tips to pass your G2 test in Markham, covering parking technique, test-day nerves and what examiners specifically look for.
Read that for the tactics. Come here for the practice — ideally both.
Our G2-Focused Lessons in Markham
Individual G2 lessons — one-on-one sessions targeting exactly what you need, whether that’s left turns, parallel parking or simply time behind the wheel before test day.
Beginner Driver Education (BDE) — the ministry-approved course: 20 hours of online theory, 10 hours of in-car training and Homelink assignments. It also shortens the wait before your G2 test from 12 months to 8.
Mock road tests — a full run-through on realistic routes, scored the way an examiner would, so you find out what needs work while there’s still time to fix it.
Defensive driving — hazard recognition beyond what the test requires, which is where the habit of scanning for pedestrians actually comes from.
Winter driving — your test still runs in snow, so this isn’t optional if you’re testing between December and March.
Full G preparation — for later, once your G2 has been in your pocket twelve months.

Why Markham Students Choose Safe Gear
We train on the roads that cost people marks — the Highway 7 left turn, the obstructed subdivision stop sign, the pedestrian-heavy crossing. Not a generic lesson plan with “Markham” written on top.
Use our car for the test. A dual-control vehicle that’s insured, maintained and won’t fail a pre-test inspection over a burnt-out bulb.
Free pick-up and drop-off throughout Markham.
Instructors who’ll tell you if you’re not ready. Sitting the test too early costs the fee and a ten-day wait before you can retry.
Seven-day scheduling, evenings and weekends included.
MTO-approved throughout. BDE graduates may qualify for an insurance discount — set by each insurer rather than guaranteed. We’ve written an honest guide to how that discount actually works.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends entirely on your starting point. Someone who's been practising with a parent for months may need two or three sessions to sharpen specific skills; a complete beginner needs considerably more. We'll tell you honestly after the first lesson.
That's the point of booking locally. We spend time on Markham's arterials, subdivisions and Unionville rather than wherever happens to be convenient.
Yes. It removes the risk of losing your appointment over a vehicle problem, which happens more often than people expect.
No — the G2 is conducted on regular roads. Highway driving comes in at the full G stage, twelve months later. Our G road test guide explains that stage.
There's no DriveTest centre in Markham itself, so it depends on availability when you book. We'll advise on which centre to choose and make sure lessons cover those routes — and our guide to DriveTest wait times explains how to find an earlier appointment.
Yes, and we'd encourage it. Your test won't be cancelled for snow, so being comfortable in it is part of being ready.
